Walter Sarlo “Rest In Peace”

Walter Sarlo was a hero to many people. He worked hard to help other people have a good life.

Walt was a PADI Instructor and HSA Dive Buddy. He loved to go diving with friends and enjoyed everyone he meets through diving. He loved volunteering as a dive buddy and helping people with disabilities learn to Scuba dive.

Working with the Handicapped Scuba Diving Alliance and the Handicapped Scuba Association of N.J., he helped get many people with disabilities in the water and gave many a better outlook on their life. His work with the HSDA Wounded Warriors Program helped certify over 700 veterans from all over the USA.

We all loved Walt for the smile he always had streaming from his face. He would be found working with his loving Queen, Fawn Wenzel, right along side of him. Walt once said to me while having a drink, “Success doesn’t have anything to do with what you gain in life or get for yourself. It’s what you do for others.”

So, we as members of the Handicapped Scuba Diving Alliance “Will hold Walt in our hearts, until we can once again hold him in heaven.

God Bless You , Thank you for all you have done.

Walter J. Sarlo, Jr. age 59 of Franklinville, passed away on Sunday evening, August 29, 2021.

Born in Camden, Walt had lived in Mount Royal, NJ for over 23 years before moving to Franklinville in 2016. After graduating high school, he had served in the Army National Guard for 6 years before attending Cumberland County College and earning an Associate’s Degree and a Certificate in Aviation Maintenance Technology. He has been employed by Boeing Inc. for over 35 years, currently as an Inspector.

Walt was an avid runner and scuba diver. He was a third tier scuba instructor (IDC staff instructor). He volunteered helping the handicapped wishing to scuba dive to attain their dream. He enjoyed home remodeling and hanging out with friends and family and was often the “life of the party”. He had an incredible sense of humor and a snickering laugh that was contagious. Walt may be best known for his love of all things Disney. He truly loved Walt Disney World in Florida and traveled there every year to experience the magic of Disney.

Walt is survived by his fiancé, Fawn Wenzel Bradley and her children, Sawyer, Wyatt and Baye Bradley; grandson, Frankie Buckley, godson, Eric Otero, former wife, Susan Sarlo, and many friends that considered him a part of their families. He will be greatly missed by his beloved dog, Ellen.

A walk-through visitation will be held Thursday evening, September 2, 2021, from 4 PM to 6 PM at Barr Funeral Home, 2104 East Main Street in Millville. The funeral service will be private. To honor Walt’s love of Disney, please wear Disney apparel or brightly colored clothing. (Mickey ears appreciated) In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Handicapped Scuba Alliance at hsanjscuba.com.

HSA of NJ Founding Member Passed Peacefully.
RAYMOND RUFFINI

Wednesday, I received the dreaded call that in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. Raymond Ruffini passed peacefully on his trip to heaven. “Death ends a life, not a relationship. All the love you created is still here Ray. All the memories are still here. You live on in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here.
His wife loved him with every part of her heart, body, and soul. He was a family man, his children loved him. It was great watching them do things with their dad. Ray Jr. would come to every dive at the Rt. 35 Train Bridge. He had a kind and gentle heart. Never and I mean never seen him yell or curse. He would give you the shirt off his back in times of need without question, if he didn’t have that shirt he would find one for you.
Ray touched so many lives that he was affectionately known as Ray Ray by his scuba diving buddies.
Ray along with Tracey were founding members of the Handicapped Scuba Association of New Jersey. There hard work put many disabled children and adults in to the water, the Manasquan Inlet and the Rt. 35 Train Bridge were their spot to make miracles happen.

I love you Ray, you will be with me forever. Thank you for making me a stronger person.

His family are working on planning a celebration of life. Details will follow once something is in place. I will past them on to you.

Twenty years ago when the Island of Bonaire was
approached by DEMA about hosting a group of
U.S. Servicemen Wounded as the result of their service
to their country.
The Island Officials of Bonaire welcomed the
opportunity to provide many services on the island to our Warriors.
We are planning to sponsor a trip on August  2022
for our Wounded Warriors.
We need your help to make this event happen.
The group is in need of new dive equipment, air fares, expenses
for food, etc.
Please help our heroes  have a good time on the island.
This year we have also contacted Wounded Warriors in the Netherlands
to also joint our troops.

My good friend Lee was a staunch supporter of the Handicapped Scuba Diving Alliance

S Lee Selisky was a former President (1994 – 1997) and Director of DEMA (1992-1998).
Selisky also served on the board of directors of the Historical Diving Society USA for twelve years, and chaired it for six years. He sat on the Board of Governors of the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame, and remained active within the industry until his death, proudly serving on the DAN (USA) Board of Directors.
My good friend Lee was a staunch supporter of the Handicapped Scuba Diving Alliance for many years. I would say Lee I need weights, Lee I need mouth pieces, Lee I need this, I need that. The “King of Lead” never let my Handicapped Kids and Wounded Warriors down, he was always there to help. Lee passed away following an eighteen month dignified battle with ALS.

I truly miss my friend, he is always in my mind as our group of volunteers work with the disabled.

As you can see we are trying to take Wounded Warriors to Bonaire, NA for certifications and a good time.

My friend once again touches my heart. Lorie his wife sent us a donation today in their names. With tears in my eyes, I promise that our trip will hold his name in the highest.

God Bless!
Lee save me a place up there.
